Mechanical engineer here. Why not put the engine in a tiny trailer you carry behind the car? That way you'll solve most of the problems. You'll have the space to easily include a proper cooling system, the noise will be out of the passenger cabin, you'll have all the boot space usable again (plus the rear window), and best of all you'll be able to detach the trailer and use the car as a normal EV when you don't need the extra range. You might even use the trailer on different electric cars if you figure out a way to tap into the electrical systems of all of them.
